The Richard D. Navies Scholarship

Congratulations to our inaugural scholarship recipients!

  • Erick Sanchez from Freemont High School (San Jose State University
  • Mareesa Valentine from Castro Valley High School (Hampton University)

The Richard D. Navies Scholarship was established by NFL veteran Hannibal Navies to honor the commitment and vision of his father, former chairman of the country’s first high school Black Studies Department. Launched in 1968, the Department continues to have a huge impact on the Bay-area and has been instrumental in propelling future leaders, scholars and artists – including Hannibal. To continue the legacy of Richard D. Navies, the scholarship supports Black student-athletes in the area San Francisco/Oakland Bay who demonstrate passion for leadership and social responsibility.

Through this award, the Foundation seeks to foster collegiate opportunities for youth who have the vision, but not necessarily the means, to pursue higher education. This year, two students will be awarded one-time scholarships of $2,500 to attend the college or university of their choice. Funds may be used for tuition, books and school-related fees and will be disbursed directly to the respective Financial Aid Offices of the recipients’ school of acceptance.
